NVOCC Customer Portal

From container bookings by email and phone on a legacy Oracle Forms system to 2,000+ customers booking for themselves.

The problem

Unifeeder (formerly Avana Logistics) took container bookings by email and phone and ran its transactions on a legacy Oracle Forms application. There was no customer portal, so every booking, change and status question landed on the back-office team.

The new portal had to sync with the existing ERP from day one, and be ready to switch to Oracle Transport Management later without a rewrite.

What we built

  • Booking, the way customers bookMulti-step booking with several container types and quantities, copy booking for repeat shipments, and split booking: request a blanket order, then drag allocated containers into separate bookings.
  • Vessel schedulesSearch sailings port to port by date and request a booking against the chosen vessel.
  • Tracking and instructionsShipment tracking per booking, and shipping instructions per container with a data-entry screen designed for speed.
  • Onboarding and accessCustomer onboarding with KYC document upload, user management and access rights.
  • ERP sync, OTM-readyScheduled jobs push portal bookings to the ERP and pull statuses back; the integration layer is designed to move to OTM APIs with minimal change.

The real screens

  • Bookings by status, with filters customers actually use.
  • Split booking: one blanket order, several bookings.
  • Vessel schedules, port to port, bookable in one click.
  • Tracking from shipper to discharge.

How it's built

Angular front end and Spring Boot services on Apache Tomcat, Oracle database, clustered EC2 instances behind load balancers on AWS, and custom OAuth 2.0. Built to deploy as a monolith or as microservices, and delivered in increments. Queries were tuned to cut round trips to the ERP database.

Results

  • 2,000+ customers onboarded.
  • Thousands of bookings created through the portal since 2018.
  • Bookings moved from email and phone to self-service.

“They did a wonderful job and then, there was no looking back.”
